With the inspiration of Sri Devanayagi, we bought two cows paid for by one of
her friends from Holland. To manage to dairy with two cows became a strain in
our budget. As westerners, we are used to cows giving more the 30 liters of milk
per day, and the cows in India give any where between 8 to 15 liters per time.
In the beginning, we were getting 8 liters per day and this was not enough to
give 50 children, so we decided to give it to only the children who were living
here. The second cow we sold because she was too old, and bought in her place
another cow which gave milk, this gave us 16 liters per day.
As the cost of maintenance is very high, so Sri Param decided to get another 3
milking cows and 6 young claves, two of which are now ready to be impregnate. We
have 3 young calves between 10 days to two months (April 15, 2005), two came
when we purchased the cows, and one was born in our barn.. In all we have 14,
and hope to get two more milking cows so that we can produce between 50
to 60 liters per day. And by next year with the same number of cows we hope to
produce about 80 to 90 liters per day. We need about 400 Euro to do this, we
hope that you could help. 60 liters will helps to break even and at the same
time feeding the kids.
In nine to twelve months from now we will have another 7 calves, and after fifteen months another 4. The cows which give birth after 5 to 7 days will start to produce more milk then they do at the present time.
Before our cow shed could house 5 cows and now it
can house about 16 cows to 18 cows depending on their size. We raised just under
2,000 Euro from Sri Devanayagi's friends for the cows and chickens and their
sheds, now we have spent just under 4,000 Euros.
