The evening of Friday, 11 November 2005, after weeks of restless nights for all of us because of the expected birth, finally we were all witness of our house cow giving birth to a female calf.

At first site the boys called her Lakshmi, since we already have a one year old calf with that name, I called her Alagalakshmi, because she is so beautiful!!

One hour after birth, she made her first careful steps in the cow house and with a little help from the boys; she for the first time drank her mother’s milk..

After giving birth to the placenta, which as the tradition here, was hang into a special tree, the new mother was thoroughly washed with tumeric powder, a natural antiseptic. After that on both sides of her back two circles were carefully painted with lime. According to the milkman who did the whole procedure, the lime would relief the pain from giving birth.

At first it looked like we had an other black calf, but surprisingly, the next morning Alagalakshmi turned out to be a beautiful Indian reddish brown cow with only a pinch of black at the end of her tail. That morning she was already testing her four well-shaped legs and her ability to jump and run. It was fun seeing her exploring all the new things she encountered on that couple of square meters.

The special milk, which is thick and very nutritious, which the mother produces the first two or three days after giving birth, is partly for Alagalakshmi. She cannot drink it all so the rest we take, boil, and eat and share with whoever comes here to celebrate the birth of the new calf. All the kids who come here love it, except the milkman’s son!!

Nearly a week after being born we let her run and jump and explore the world here in the garden at IFC, she loves it and outruns all the kids! She is still only drinking with her mother but after a couple of weeks she will start eating grass, as her teeth will then be big enough.

Alagalakshmi is the first calf being conceived and born here as such she will stay here and become part of the family.

View the pictures we took to be part of this beautiful event and see how gorgeous she looks!
