Village Life

Harvesting Time

harvesting time

There is joy in the air during harvest time, as the villager enjoys a reasonably good harvest season. For many there will only be one harvest for the year, for those who depend on rainwater. Most of the poor farmers from the village do not have the means to have the own water supply.

After years without rain, the villagers have enjoyed two years of rain, the first downpour happened the day that Shri Param set foot on the soil of the village, rain poured, last year, and again this year.

As the villagers depend on rain, this was a reasonably good year. The rainfall was not as good as last year, nevertheless a good year. This years harvest will promise many families rice supply for a year and for some cash when the yield is higher then the needs. Very few of the families enjoy the blessing of a high yield to earn enough to support their family. The rest of the year, they depend on laboring work, this all depends if there is work around..

This year we would like to help several families to have the opportunity to cultivate more then one crop. We are hoping to offer them land, water and seeds, and all they have is work, for which they will keep 75% of the profit. The 25% that we receive will go towards helping more needy people.

To achieve this we will need your help.

Each 7 hp submersible pump that we successfully install, will help 2 families. On 7 acres we would like to install 3 pumps, and for the first pump it will cost about US $ 2,900 or 2,500 Euro as the electricity supply will cost about 60,000 rupees. Electricity supply, in Madurai district a poor farmer has to pay 50,000 rupees deposit, after which the board will only charge 700 rupees per quarter instead at the price being 5 rupees per unit used. Unfortunately most small farmers do not have 50,000 rupees, then the pump shed and wiring about 10,000 rupees. .

An average 7 hp submersible pump cost about 15,000 to 17,000 rupees.

Bore work will cost about 40 rupees per feet, and we need to dig about 250 to 300 feet, then 2 sets of pipe at about 400 rupees per length, and for this we need 25 to 30 lengths each.

The first 2500 Euro we raise can help supply 2 acres, and we would like to install three water pumps. The pumps installed there after will only cost about 1.500 Euro.
